3 New Downtown Spots the Pandemic Can't Stop

It takes grit to open a new restaurant during a recession. But to open one during a global pandemic wreaking havoc on the traditional food industry? That takes Cleveland-level grittiness. Luckily, three new downtown spots have just that. While many restaurants are closing their doors these days, UJerk Caribbean Eatery, Sixth City Sailor's Club, and Beyond Juicery + Eatery are opening their doors for business and they are KILLING IT. We tried these spots recently and here is the review:

UJerk Caribbean Eatery

850 Euclid Ave., Cleveland, OH 44114

-Opened in July, UJerk is a fantastic addition to the downtown fast-casual circuit, an area where downtown has been lacking for some time (outside of Chipotle, Shake Shack, & 3,817 Subways...we needed something new)

-Fare: Jamaican/Caribbean

-Price: $8-14

-Menu Highlights: Sandwiches, wraps, salads, and pasta mainly with Jerk chicken (but also offers spicy tuna, shrimp, crab, and falafel). Side options include fries, coleslaw, and fruit

-The go-to: Jerk chicken sandwich with Jerk fries (pictured below)

Sixth City Sailor's Club

668 Euclid Ave., Unit 2, Cleveland, OH 44114

-Opened in August, Sixth City Sailor's Club is a sit-down bar and restaurant with take-out availability that occupies the location where Hodges once operated

-Fare: Bar food with seafood options

-Price: $8-15

-Menu Highlights: Possibly the most stacked appetizer lineup in town with poutine, fried calamari, pierogis, shrimp fritters, buffalo bites, and more. Entrees mainly include burgers, po'boys, and sandwiches. Too many good things on the menu that we'll need to keep going back for months to try them all

-The go-to: The Cleveland Polish Boy (pictured below...topped with kielbasa, lots of coleslaw, fries, barbeque and hot sauce)

Beyond Juicery + Eatery

226 Euclid Ave., Cleveland, OH 44114

-Opened in mid-July, Beyond has planted its flag as the go-to healthy eating joint downtown for breakfast and lunch. Occupies the spot on Euclid formerly held by J. Gumbo's

-Fare: Health/Cleansing

-Price: $5-13

-Menu Highlights: Smoothies, wraps, salad bowls, and juice

-The go-to: The Banana Nut smoothie (pictured below) or the PB+J wrap
