5 Reasons You Need to Attend Sips & Swigs
Ever been to a "virtual" beer fest? Neither have we. But we can't wait for our first one next Saturday, September, 12 at Sips & Swigs. Now in its 7th year, Sips & Swigs is an annual craft beer tasting event -- with brewers from around Ohio -- hosted by the West Side Catholic Center's Associate Board to raise money for the Center and its programs. This year's event will be held virtually (meaning that attendees will pick up to-go boxes in the days leading up to the event) due to the ongoing pandemic. Wondering whether you should "attend"? Below are the five reasons we are most excited about attending.
Note: To register, click here. Tickets are only available through Friday, September 4 at 12PM.
5. The Locals: Several of Cleveland's Best Brewers Will Be There
Each to-go box will include an assorted six-pack of beers from some of Cleveland's greats. This year's local brewers include Saucy Brew Works (Ohio City/Pinecrest), Bookhouse Brewing (Ohio City), Sibling Revelry (Westlake), Hansa (Ohio City), Working Class Brewery (West Park), and Railroad Brewing (Avon).
4. The Out-of-Towners: Try Something New from Up-and-Coming Brewers Around Ohio
To-go boxes will also include cans and bottles with labels that you might not be as familiar with, but are just as good. Several brewers from around Ohio are participating, including North High Brewing (Columbus), Numbers Brewing (Lisbon), and HiHo (Cuyahoga Falls).
3. The Extras: Za from Ohio City Pizzeria & Cocktails
In addition to the beers, each box will include a $15 gift card to Ohio City Pizzeria, which you can order when you are ready to start drinking (or, more likely for us at least, to help you feel better the next day), and premixed cocktails from Buckeye Vodka and Lillo Liqueurs. Also, if you haven't heard about Ohio City Pizzeria and its amazing mission to help low-income Clevelanders, be sure to check it out here.
2. The Secret Recipe: Hansa's New Recipe
Hansa, the authentic Eastern European brewer in Ohio City, will be brewing a special beer only for the first 100 to register. Supposedly, this specialty brew will be made from a newly discovered recipe used by ancient Jesuit priests. Sips & Swigs is your only chance to get your hands on a pint of this.
1. The Cause: Helping Cleveland's Homeless
And, of course, the coolest reason to attend Sips & Swigs is to support the cause. All proceeds from the event will directly benefit the West Side Catholic Center, an organization in Ohio City (corner of W. 32nd and Lorain) that provides hot meals, clothes, shelter, and workforce training to Cleveland's homeless population. In 2019, the Center served over 47,000 meals, supplied 7,000 pieces of clothing or similar household goods, provided 10,895 nights of lodging, and assisted with 79 job placements. Now, with Cleveland's homeless population hit the hardest by the pandemic and recession, there has never been a better time to support the West Side Catholic Center.
